How do I install Toastmaster Timer in Zoom?
- Enable Developer Mode in your Zoom client (Settings → Apps → Developer Mode)
- Go to Zoom Marketplace → Your Apps → Local Test
- Upload the
manifest.json file from the app
- Start a Zoom meeting and click Apps → Toastmaster Timer
How do I use the timer?
- Select a timing role (Standard Speech, Ice Breaker, etc.) or choose Custom to set your own times
- Optionally enter a speaker name (or select from Zoom participants)
- Click START to begin timing
- The timer will automatically change your virtual background to green, yellow, or red based on the timing rules
- Click STOP to pause, RESET to clear, or FINISH to save the result to the report
Can I customize the timing rules?
Yes! Click "Edit timing rules" next to the role dropdown to customize default timing for each speech type.
You can also select "Custom" role and set your own green, yellow, and red thresholds.
How do I manage multiple speakers?
Use the AGENDA tab to:
- Add speakers manually or import from text
- Drag and drop to reorder speakers
- Click on a speaker to load them into the timer
- View completed speakers with checkmarks
Where is my data stored?
All data (agenda, reports, timing rules) is stored locally in your browser's localStorage.
Your data never leaves your device and is not sent to any servers.
The virtual background isn't changing. What's wrong?
- Ensure you've granted virtual background permissions when installing the app
- Check that you're in a Zoom meeting (the feature only works in meetings)
- Verify your Zoom client supports virtual backgrounds
- Make sure the background images are accessible (check browser console for errors)
How do I export timing reports?
Go to the REPORT tab and click "Copy Report to Clipboard". The report will be copied as
tab-separated text that you can paste into Excel, Google Sheets, or any text editor.
Can I use this app without a speaker name?
Yes! The speaker name is optional. You can start the timer without entering a name.
However, if you want to save reports, you'll need to enter a name before finishing.
Known Issues & Limitations
- The app requires Zoom client version 5.13.0 or higher
- Virtual background feature only works when you have permission and are in a meeting
- Participant list may be limited based on Zoom API permissions
- Data is stored locally - clearing browser data will remove your agenda and reports
